The African Diaspora Village reimagines what coming home can mean: not a settlement built apart from the community that’s already there, but one city, on Ghana’s western coast, where returning diaspora and local Ghanaian families build a future side by side.
The Vision
ACTIC has profiled 2,000 acres of land in Busua, in Ghana’s Western Region, for a fully integrated city — homes, schools, markets, civic life, and energy infrastructure, shared by diaspora returnees and the local community from day one. No separate diaspora quarter. No parallel enclave. One community, one city, built by both.
What Makes This Different
Other diaspora resettlement initiatives have learned a hard lesson: when returnees are settled apart from their host communities, the result can be division rather than unity. The African Diaspora Village is designed around the opposite principle, integration by design. Diaspora and local households share neighbourhoods, schools, and markets. The city’s traditional leadership holds a permanent, active role in how the city is governed, not a ceremonial one. And land is allocated through a process built to give diaspora and local families alike a genuine stake in the city, side by side.
The City at a Glance
Busua sits on the Gulf of Guinea, near the port city of Sekondi-Takoradi. Across 2,000 acres, the African Diaspora Village will bring together:
- A city centre and commercial district
- Hospitals
- Schools and market places woven into residential neighbourhoods
- A police station and civic administration
- The palace of the Ahanta Traditional Council
- Football pitches and playgrounds
- Homes built side by side for returning diaspora and local families alike
Powering the Future
The city will run on a closed-loop energy system that turns its own waste and sewage into power for homes, streets, and businesses — a circular, sustainable model already proven elsewhere on the continent.
A Partnership Rooted in Heritage
Busua is the paramount seat of the Ahanta Traditional Area, and the African Diaspora Village is being developed in direct partnership with its traditional leadership. This is a city built with Ghana’s customary institutions at its centre, not around them.
Built in Phases, Built to Last
Rather than one large undertaking, the city will rise in disciplined phases — starting with foundational infrastructure and a first integrated neighbourhood, then expanding step by step as each phase proves itself. It’s a model built for the long term, not just for a groundbreaking ceremony.
